about

Recorded in a basement in Olympia sometime in 2001.

Originally released as a CD-R (with different artwork) for our November 2001 West Coast Tour.

Before 2021 drops off, I hereby celebrate the 20th anniversary year of the home-recorded self-released CD-R by the trio known as (among other things*) ZEETHAR.

This group comprised Nick Bindeman** on drums, Ben Fischel*** on guitar, & me on contrabass, making our improvised free-rock/doom-jazz/noise-drone ruckus in the basements & backyards & bars of Olympia WA, way back in 2001.

Although our music was improvised, we would often decide beforehand on some particular story arc to follow, or some particular feeling or concept to evoke. One piece was informed by, and sought in its abstract way to portray, the tale of John Henry the Steel-Drivin' Man. There was another piece that was about the feeling of taking a good big wholesome shit. Other such guiding or generative schemes, as well as the titles of the pieces, have unfortunately long since escaped my memory.

We gave ourselves a different band name for nearly every show we played, so putting the name ZEETHAR on this release has the feel of the merely provisional. But there it is.

The original CD-R release of this album featured clippings from old books & magazines (none of which I still possess) as the artwork/liners, hastily selected & assembled in our tour van. The cover art for this reissue uses images scanned from a Polaroid photo of us playing live at the storied Olympia venue Le Voyeur.

More archival material from my various erstwhile projects will appear in the coming months; stay tuned.
